ABOUT
Academic signage and exhibition design project, where we propose an exhibition for the FIESP Cultural Center with the work of Katsushika Hokusai as its theme.
STRATEGY
We divided the exhibition space into 4 large main rooms, each representing one of the Japanese islands: Kyushu, Shikoku, Honshu and Hokkaido. In each sector, the visitor would see works that represent landscapes from that place, thus creating the concept of “A Journey through Japan”.
The signage system is made up of guidance, direction, identification and regulation signs, all strategically positioned to guide the visitor and identify the section in which they are, reinforcing the feeling of traveling through Japanese territory.
The traditional content, but which needs to speak to a current audience, made us seek reference in the design and architecture of contemporary Japan, taking care not to create a caricatured representation.
DESIGN
Based on references such as the work of architect Kengo Kuma, we decided to use uncoated wood as the basis for the exhibition's signs. The font used was designed by Caio Kondo and was inspired by contemporary Japanese design. The pictograms were custom designed to match the selected typography.
The grid was strictly followed, from the design of the pictograms and layout of the signs to the arrangement of texts and works on the exhibition walls. There was also a concern with visual ergonomics, ensuring that all information was at a comfortable height for the visitor.
